Sarah smiled slightly; today she was having a day off and she was enjoying herself quite a lot. She had decided she would go shopping for a few things that she and Zachariah would eventually need at home and then she was going to hit the shops where they were selling clothes and dressed; she always had a soft spot for these after all! Her first stops would most likely be food but she wouldn’t buy these right away-she needed to decide what she and her brother would eat eventually before actually buying it and since she wanted to shop right after she would wait until she was done shopping before doing so. It sounded like a good plan to her and she was happy she could actually relax from all the stressful work that it could be sometimes to heal people.
She loved her job though, more than anything, really, but she liked having a day off here and there to be able to relax before going back to business and healing others. It tired her most of the time because she was using spells that used her energy so when she arrived home she fell asleep not so long after she was done making food and taking care of Zach’s child. She’d gladly take the day today to rest and make sure she had all of her energy back. It was her second day off by now and she thought that the next day, she’d be ready to hit back the hospital where she would be quite helpful. She was eager to go help the kids and play with them. She loved them all so much; it was just sad to know that they were sick and that some wouldn’t even be able to recover from their illness and die soon. She frowned at the thought but soon returned her attention back to the shops where she would gaze at the various items that were sold.
Towels, baskets, umbrellas, food, anything you could ever want were in the town square. Billet Doux was such a nice place to stay at when you weren’t a pirate, when you were working for the law. She wished things would have been more peaceful but she knew that with the hunt to the powers of the Gods (who haven’t heard of this, really?), there’d be more and more tensions perhaps even more and more death. The thought of it made her heart skip a beat and got her to bump into someone. She held onto her purse making sure she still had it and gasped hoping she didn’t hurt them. That was for her looking everywhere but in front of her!
“I’m so so so sorry! Forgive me, please!” She said hoping she didn’t hurt her new ‘victim’.

In some ways, Kate sometimes wished she wasn’t an admiral.
It was a hell of a lot of responsibility. She was one of the highest ranking officials in the Navy, leading it, at least partially responsible for the direction in which it was going (not a good direction, and she knew it, but she didn’t seem to be able to do anything about it). It was a stressful job, particularly considering Kate was not content to sit behind a desk and do paperwork all day. No, she still went out on patrols with one of several sky ships, whichever happened to be in port. She still kept her fighting skills sharp and did her part of the menial labor, because she believed that in order to be an effective and worthy leader, she had to be at the very least competent at all aspects of the job. An admiral had no business going soft.
However, with the drain on her time that that practice presented, Kate was hard-pressed to keep up with all of the bureaucratic nonsense and paperwork (ye gods, there was so much paperwork). She had to work late into the night when she was in the office, and often ended up bringing a lot of it to do while on patrol. As much as she hated to overlap them, she didn’t exactly have much of a choice. It had to get done, and she only had so many hours in the day in which to do it. Still, squinting at paperwork all day long gave her a headache, so she tried to give herself a break every once in a while.
Today was one of those breaks. She’d been stuck in her office slogging through a backlog of paperwork for nearly a week, and was about to go completely stir crazy from it. Not to mention that being in fairly close confines with Admiral Bones for any length of time tended to rub Kate the wrong way. Those two together, and she’d been about to pitch her desk through a wall just to get some fresh air. And that wasn’t even taking into account her confusion and indecision revolving around Jericho Romanov. Kate was not an easy woman to shake, but even she was beginning to have trouble with the stress, not that it showed to anyone but herself. As much as she hated to admit it, she badly needed a break.
She couldn’t afford actual time off, but Kate had decided that, at least for a few hours, she was going to forget the paperwork and get outside into the fresh air. She’d been outside for about an hour now, and it was doing wonders for her mood. The breeze coming in off the sea brought the fresh, sharp scent of salt water. Kate might not be able to swim, but she still enjoyed that scent. She had walked down to the Navy docks, just to see, and then headed over into the marketplace.
Kate had no intention of buying anything. She simply enjoyed seeing all of the different people, all different races from all across the world. This was one of the less chaotic marketplaces, simply because of the large Navy presence in Billet Doux. The Navy didn’t tolerate thieves, and cracked down hard anytime one tried anything, so there wasn’t much of that going on. It was nice; the fresh air and the noise of the crowd was a refreshing change from the stuffy, still air of her office. It almost made her not want to go back. She could spend a few more hours here, at least.
Someone bumped into Kate’s arm then, snapping her out of her thoughts. Her first thought was a pickpocket, as that was often their way of distracting you while they took your wallet, but that thought was dismissed as soon as she saw who it was who had bumped into her. Sarah Dawson, the younger sister of one of the other admirals, who worked part time as a healer for the Navy. Katherine had met the young angel several times before, and had nothing but respect for her.
Katherine gave her best version of a reassuring smile, patting the angel gently on the arm. ”It’s fine, Sarah. No harm done.”

Sarah’s face brightened to say the least when she recognized the person she bumped into. Katherine; she admired the woman so much! She was strong and could fight and was high ranked into the navy! Not to add that she was extremely nice and sweet when she wanted to be so. She smiled slightly at the woman and quickly gave her a hug. That was always the way Sarah greeted people either they liked it or not; with hugs. She thought that hugs and smiles would always comfort people no matter what their mood was. Not a lot of people knew the true effect of telling good morning or hello to a person in a happy manner; it brightened their days and being a healer, she learned to do so to everyone and not to the people she was healing only! “Hi Katherine!” She said just as happy as she would ever be. She never asked her if she preferred to be called Kate or Katherine for she heard a lot of people from the navy call her that but she thought that Katherine sounded so much sweeter than Kate. Even if the woman was strong and gave off that feeling, she was still feminine; at least, in Sarah’s eyes and she still deserved to be treated as a woman. Either ways, she was happy to see someone she knew and to be able to chat with someone who wasn’t a seller. Not that she hated them but she preferred to have some familiarity around. She looked at the woman a little wondering about if she was on duty or not at that time until she decided to think that she wasn’t considering she was at a market place and wasn’t followed by a man or to insure protection to the people who were there. That also was when she got the idea to propose her to shop! It was better to do so when she wasn’t alone and she was hoping that the woman would agree on keeping her company. “I’m happy to see you here! You got some time off?” She asked her just as happily as she could ever be. “I’m shopping around, maybe if you have some time you can come with me! I’ve seen a few dresses that would look absolutely amazing on you!” She added, her smile growing bigger and bigger as she spoke to the woman. Who knows, maybe she would actually agree to spend some time with her, that could be fun! Not to add that some feminine company wouldn’t hurt Sarah to have. There were a few girls in the navy, of course but she would rarely get to see them which explained her joy when she had the chance to do so while not being at work. Kate blinked as Sarah threw her arms around her in a hug. She wasn’t much of a hugger, or really any outward displays of emotion, but she didn’t necessarily have anything against it. She just wasn’t the sort of woman who wore her heart on her sleeve, and physical displays of emotion didn’t suit the gruff, serious admiral. But she didn’t want to hurt the girl’s feelings either. Even though it probably wasn’t terribly enjoyable to hug someone who was almost literally made of rock. She didn’t quite hug Sarah back, just sort of awkwardly patted her back until the shorter woman released her.
She couldn’t help but be somewhat entertained by the young angel’s bubbly energy. She was so very unlike her older brother, always solemn and usually quiet. It was a wonder the two came from the same family and got along as well as they did. It was particularly interesting that they had both ended up in the Navy, albeit in different aspects. Zachariah was an admiral, a fighter, while Sarah’s only contact with violence was when she was healing in its aftermath. Kate had to admit to herself, she respected and even liked both of them, but for different reasons. Zachariah had a strong moral code, one that meshed well with Kate’s own; both of them opposed Bones’ plan to overthrow the gods, though for differing reasons. Sarah was just a genuinely good person, always wanting to help people and make them smile, however that may be. It was rare to see that kind of person in this day and age; it took an especially bright person to resist the darkness of the current times.
A faint smile crossed the golem’s face at Sarah’s enthusiastic greeting, her worry over their collision gone without a trace. She wasn’t all that fond of her full name, preferring to use the shortened version when on first name terms with someone. And she was on first name terms with Sarah; Admiral Shale was for those who she outranked or disliked, and Sarah was neither, seeing as she wasn’t technically part of the Navy. ”Please, Sarah, it’s Kate,” she corrected gently. It didn’t matter all that much in the long run, but Katherine just felt too… soft. Too effeminate for the golem’s liking.
She gave a small chuckle at what Sarah said next. Time off was nothing but a myth for a Navy officer of her station. Even the lower ranking officers tended not to have much time for themselves. It was a demanding life. There was a reason a lot of people joked that Navy officers were married to their work. There wasn’t much time for personal pursuits outside of it, particularly romantic ones. Navy men and women who did get married tended to do so to other Navy officers, though it was frowned upon, simply because of how much time they spent together and the fact that their husband or wife would understand that the work always had to come first. ”It’s nice to see you too, Sarah. And… you could say that, I suppose.” She’d given herself some time off for sanity’s sake. Technically, it counted.
Shopping, hm? That was usually something far too frivolous and feminine to really appeal to Kate, but who knew? It would be nice to spend time with someone outside of work, and damned if she hadn’t earned herself a bit of indulgence. She had plenty of pay saved up, seeing as she didn’t exactly have much occasion to spend it normally. After a moment, she nodded. ”Alright, sure. Why not?” She could always get back to work later if she felt like she needed to.

Sarah stared at Kate; she knew that the woman wasn’t one who was used to gestures such as hugs. She figured it was because she was working so much, she didn’t have the time to appreciate other’s company! It was also why she was happy more than anything to be there for the woman, make her discover the wonders of shopping! Oh, this was going to be great! She could feel it! She tried to remember the names of a few shops she could drag Katherine into. She was determined to have her and be comfortable into the pretty outfits she thought that would look simply amazing on the woman. She knew about a few dresses but she wondered about if she would even dare to try one. Maybe she could start slowly showing her pretty outfits that were with pants, then gradually showing her skirts and in the end, those awesome dresses! She wasn’t ashamed to wear any, in fact she loved these! She wondered about why not all girls liked to wear them! They could make you look just so amazing and great and fabulous!
Her thoughts about the dresses soon vanished when Kate finally spoke. Oh, yes, Kate…but Katherine sounded so much prettier! Not that Kate sounded ugly! They both sounded great; she just preferred names that were more feminine and she thought that Katherine sounded good to her-even if she was strong! The name didn’t make how strong you were! Kate was such an amazing woman! She had to be proud of herself and show it to the world! It will be fun to talk about it to Zachariah once the day would be over! He’d surely loved to hear about it!
“Why? Both sound good on you! You can be strong and still have a pretty name! Not that Kate isn’t pretty, it’s great! But I love how Katherine sounds and I know it fits you!” she said speaking up her mind, like a child. Perhaps it was because she had been healing some lately that she was speaking like them…that and it was part of her personality. She loved talking anyways!
She smiled slightly when Kate confirmed the fact that she was on a day off, or at least, on a few hours off! Great, they will be able to do some shopping! She clasped her hands together in satisfaction before smiling brightly still at the older woman. “Wonderful!” it was even better when Kate agreed to Sarah’s proposition. She looked around for shops that might be interesting for both her and Kate and spotted the first one she wanted to visit. “Here! There’s pretty things and they’re not too expensive, you want to check?” she asked her trying not to be pushy.

It was lucky for Kate that she wasn’t the wishy-washy type. As soon as she had agreed to spend some time out with Sarah, the responsible part of her (which, honestly, was most of her personality) began to nudge at her. She had a lot of work still to do, and she wasn’t in the habit of blowing that sort of thing off. It might only be paperwork, and not actually directly related to helping people, but it was still her responsibility to get it done. It was her job as much as the more satisfying parts were. And for someone with the (deserved) reputation for reliability that she had, it was difficult to justify putting off work, no matter how boring, in order to go shopping. Which wasn’t exactly something she did very often by choice, anyway.
But Kate had made her decision. The paperwork wasn’t about to go bad, and she wasn’t months behind like many officers of her level or similar. It would keep until tomorrow. It was mostly just filing reports on things that had already happened, anyway. She made a point of prioritizing the more urgent things and finishing them earlier in the day, and had made sure anything time sensitive was done before leaving her office. There wasn’t anything likely to happen that would need her immediate attention in the next few hours; nothing, at least, that wouldn’t create such a large commotion that half the town would notice it.
So she shoved that nagging part of herself to the back of her mind. She’d spent as long as she could remember throwing herself into her work with a vengeance to keep herself from dwelling on what she had lost, to the point of eschewing any kind of interpersonal relationship. It was about time, she figured, that she let go of that. And since Sarah seemed so enthusiastic about this, it was easy enough to agree.
A faint smile quirked at the corner’s of Kate’s mouth as the healer Angel went on about her name. It really wasn’t that big of a deal to Kate, but over the years she had found that the shorter version of her name both suited her better and made it easier for the big manly macho types to accept that she had authority over them (though beating them handily in a sparring match tended to do the same). Still, it really didn’t matter that much to her one way or the other. She gave a slight shrug. ”Alright, Sarah, if you prefer it that much, Katherine is fine.”
Sarah immediately pointed out a nearby shop for them to start in. Kate looked over at it. The clothes on display in the window did not immediately assault her eyes with obnoxiously bright colors (that sort of thing seemed to be on the rise, and Kate found it singularly unpleasant to look at), so she didn’t dismiss it out of hand. A closer look reassured the golem that there were plenty of choices that weren’t too frilly or feminine she might be able to pick from. So, after a moment, Kate nodded. ”Sure.”

Sarah smiled at the navy admiral; she had rarely seen the woman on a day off which meant that today ought to be an exceptional day! She admired Katherine; the woman was so focused on her work and always serious about it, taking it at heart just like her brother did. She was a strong one too and always thought that strong women were a model to follow…of course, not the rude ones but they could use more women who could stand up for themselves. She too was taking her work at heart, focusing on it when needed but she knew when to take breaks-either way, her body would tell her, especially when she would feel tired and or pass out from too much healing. Besides, when she was having days off like this, she was better to enjoy them! You didn’t have often and knowing what her brother was enrolled in, the woman mustn’t have often either! She even wondered about how she and Zach did to manage to remain sane from all this paper work and patrolling they had to do!
But it wasn’t the time to think about work, it was the time to enjoy herself with a woman she enjoyed the company of. A few girls tended to fear her but Sarah didn’t. She, of course, had heard of a few gossips from the other people from the navy, thinking that she was scary. Sarah didn’t. She thought she was just a woman like any other except that she had a job where males would usually be in majority. That was all and Sarah, unlike many people still, didn’t see a problem with that.
Her smile grew bigger when she agreed to let her call her by her real name instead of a nick name. Perfect! She thought it was simply lovely and she didn’t want to get Katherine upset because of this.
Sarah turned her attention back to the shop she had proposed to go to and nodded at Katherine happily once she agreed. Yay! She would get to spend her day shopping a little. She needed a few more outfits, at least one and she had to admit…she had a soft spot for all these pretty and lovely dresses they would sell from time to time. Maybe she would even find something that Malachi would like her in. She blushed slightly at the thought and shook her head before grabbing the Admiral’s hand and leading her to the shop. “Let’s go! It should be fun!” she said excitedly.
She arrived inside the shop and released Katherine’s hand, her eyes scanning a few dresses only spotting a few that Katherine might like. She pointed at the rack to the woman. “I know you don’t like bright colors too much and these seem to be pretty.” She stated until her eyes landed on a pretty light pink dress, suiting Sarah’s tastes. “Oh my gosh, this is so adorable.” She said taking it off the rack and staring at it. She smiled and turned around to show it to Kate. “What do you think?” she asked the woman, smiling still.

It was, in a sense, a part of Kate’s identity that she was a strong woman. She’d been told it many times in the past, both in an admiring sense and a less positive one (there had been plenty of people over her relatively long life who found her brusque manner unpleasant, particularly coming from a woman), and she had long since accepted it as truth.
However, there was a certain kind of strength to someone like Sarah, as well, different from Kate’s own. Kate did not bend or break under the stresses of her Navy life, but they certainly affected her. She had seen plenty of dark things in her time, and they had slowly changed her into the woman she was today. Not pessimistic, exactly, but a realist. She had no illusions about the way the world worked, and the horrible sort of things that sometimes went on (even within the organization she herself was a part of).
Sarah had somehow managed to avoid being so changed. She was a healer, which meant that she had seen some pretty unpleasant things, but the angel remained as bubbly, open, and optimistic as she had been the day she started working at the Navy. Kate admired that, in a way. She couldn’t even remember having been that way herself, though she supposed she must have had something of a similar attitude when she was young. Perhaps not. Perhaps she had always been the hardass, solemn woman she was today. It was so hard to remember so long ago.
Kate shook off her thoughts as Sarah grabbed onto her hand, allowing herself to be led over to the shop the angel had pointed out. She might as well let the angel’s good humor lift her spirits a little, she figured. She wasn’t likely to have so pleasant a diversion again anytime in the near future.
Once they were inside, Sarah released Kate’s hand. The Navy admiral looked around the shop; though there were no garishly bright colors, most of the clothes inside still seemed a little too feminine for her tastes. She just wasn’t accustomed to wearing anything soft or delicate; she essentially lived in her armor and work clothes, apart from when she was sleeping. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d put on anything else, if she was honest with herself. There wasn’t time for such things in her life.
The dress that Sarah pulled from the rack didn’t exactly suit the Navy golem’s taste. ”Pink…?” She stifled the discomfited look that threatened to rise to her face and instead managed a slight smile. ”Uh, it’s very pretty, Sarah, but I don’t think it’s really my style.” You don’t even have a style, she admonished herself silently, but even so, she couldn’t imagine herself wearing anything pink. She’d never be able to take herself seriously, let alone anyone else. She didn’t want to disappoint the bubbly angel, however, so after only a moment’s pause she offered a slightly uncertain suggestion. ”Perhaps something in a bit darker color…?”

Sarah giggled as she observed Kate’s reaction. She knew that these weren’t the colors she would normally do, but she would gladly take the dress for herself. She just wanted to see if she was willing to try something lighter but from the looks the woman gave her, she wasn’t. Sarah was fine with that; she would find darker colors that would suit the woman better. “I’m okay with that, but I’ll try it on, I really like it.” She said cheerfully as she spoke of the dress. The young girl was still not disappointed by Kate’s response or not any less determined than she was a few minutes ago. She wanted to help Admiral Kate to embrace her feminine side and she knew that she would be able to do it.
Girls could be strong and still wear light colors; she hoped that Kate knew this. She went to a different rack which this time had darker colors to expose. They were still feminine but not as much as the other rack she had been to which suited more her tastes than Kate’s. There was only one color that Sarah would not allow Kate to wear and it was black. Black could be pretty but the woman was always seen in dark clothes at least some colors would balance things out.
She found dark red ones and purples too. Perhaps some blue and green would look pretty on Kate. She stopped browsing through the rack and looked at the woman that was standing close to her. She seemed to be uncomfortable into such a place but she wasn’t surprised. The woman always wore armors and the likes. She even wondered about if she wore them when she was off duty. She shook her head. It was sad if it was the case but she felt that it was rude for her to ask this to a woman having Kate’s presence. She was enough uncomfortable and she didn’t want to aggravate things.
“Here are darker colors, I think some of them would suit you, you should try dark red and green.” Suggest Sarah as she smiled kindly at Kate. “Doesn’t an armor feel heavy if you wear it all day?” she questioned the woman as she tilted her head to the side before paying her attention back to the rack and pulled out a lovely dark green one. “I’m sure that the cut would do justice to your figure.” She commented with a soft smile.
