Michelle was running late. She had completely lost track of time reading a book. This was their first date after they had decided to be a couple at the Navy's Ball, and she was late. Nate would be at the library soon to get her, and she still had nothing to wear. "Should I wear a dress? Is that too fancy? Maybe trousers would be better..." she hastily grumbled to herself. She was practically scrambling though her small closet, end eventually found something that would suffice. She spotted a knee-length, cutesy plain fabric dress. "I guess this''ll work. Nathan isn't picky, though, is he?"
Not only was this her first date with Nathan, this was her first date with anyone- much less someone who was a navy officer. She slipped the dress on, but was having a hard time tying the bow at the back. After wasting a few minutes struggling with it, she decided to leave it. Nate might help when he got there. She pulled on her shoes, and then realized her hair was a complete mess from her clumsily scrambling around. Hurriedly, she tried to smooth it out. Soon, though, she got it to her liking.
As Nathan wasn't there yet, she decided to work out her anxiety and put it to good use: organizing her room. It was a mess. She picked up the dressed scattered around and placed them in her chest-of-drawers. Next she piled up her smaller-amount-than-her-dresses trousers and blouses, folded them, and into another drawer they went. "This looks okay," she told herself, "I don't think there's much else to pick up..." She felt slightly less nervous than before, and sat down on the edge of the chair beside her writing desk,
"Why am I so nervous? I don't think I'm usually this spastic and nervous, am I? I guess I just really like him... I guess?" She was confusing herself, and really wished she wasn't acting so unusually. She hoped she wouldn't ruin their relationship. this early on, with her out-of-character behavior. Was this what love felt like? Did Nathan feel the same way? She nervously began to pick at the loose ribbon from the sides of her dress.

If Nathan was honest with himself, he would have to admit that he was really nervous about he and Michelle's first date. The two had known each other for awhile now, for what, a couple of months? Maybe six or seven, which wasn't long at all, even by a human's standards for people to meet and then begin dating. The blonde boy had to admit though- he'd liked the pretty angel since he had first met her. She was smart and laughed at all of his jokes, no matter how dumb or nonsensical they were. He had come to really enjoy her company, too. Which wasn't hard, since Nathan enjoyed pretty much everybody, especially when they paid more than a shred of attention to him. You could say that the loud-mouthed halfbreed had a bit of a problem with attention, a problem the Navy had yet to break in him. If he was to continue being completely honest with himself, he didn't think he really had what it took to be a Navy officer.
He was too free-spirited and laid-back to really care much about serious crime and he always seemed to fall for the sob stories petty thieves threw at him, not to mention he didn't really have much battle or fighting experience. If it hadn't been for the fact that he had been shipped off to the Navy at an impressionable age, there was no doubt in the blonde's mind that he'd be doing something else entirely, rather than a career in the military. He didn't mind the Navy, his heart was in the right place and all, but his pitiful physique got him bum jobs such as patrol and whatnot. But it was because all of that that he got to meet Michelle, which he would be forever grateful to the Navy for. It had been a simple gig, protect her and make sure she did her job like the Top Brass asked her to, and all would be golden. Up until that moment he walked into that library, he had absolutely no idea who she was or what she even looked like. But man, he had really gotten lucky he was paired up with such a wonderful person.
There was a sort of instant attraction between the two of them, he decided. He hadn't come to realize until much later, but when coming upon this epiphany, it all sort of made sense suddenly. His relationship with her, the reasons he always felt weird when he was near her. Nathan really, really liked her. And even though they were already good friends, he wanted this date to go well. The blonde halfbreed wanted to make a lasting impression as an awesome boyfriend, rather than the cool friend. So everything had to be perfect. The blonde boy bounded up the small staircase behind the library up to Michelle's apartment. With chocolates in one hand and a ladle in the other, Nathan gave his best cute smile and wrapped on the door with his wrist. "Oh Michelle, I'm here. ~" he said in a sing-song voice.

"Nathan's here~!" She was trying not to squeal loudly, the last thing she wanted was for Nathan to hear. She hopped quickly around her room in excitement, before stopping in front of the door. "Deep breath... It'll be just fine," she whispered to herself. She turned the knob, and opened the door. Much to her not-surprised happiness, Nathan Alexander was standing, with a smile, all cleaned up and adorable as ever at her door. "Hi, er.. you brought chocolates?" She loved chocolates- he even got the kind she liked: caramels. How did he know? Perhaps she'd mentioned them in her not-so-unusual rambling sessions.
"Can I eat those later? I might forget them wherever we end up going. We can leave them here." She took them from his hand and trotted back into her room to place them on her desk. After her return, she closed the door behind her. and followed Nate down the stairs, into the lobby, and to the front door. She made sure the sign said "closed" and that the door was locked, and opened the door. She still felt warm and fluttery inside, although it seemed to be cured somewhat now that she wasn't alone anymore.
Following Nate outside, she noted that there was a slight breeze outside. She personally loved the warm Caribbean breezes here, and raised her nose to smell the wafting scent of flowers from the nearby town square. Michelle grabbed his hand, and began to swing her arm happily, with a hop in her step. "Where is he taking me? Are we going on to dinner, to the beach?" she thought to herself. She would love to eat dinner, but a walk on the beach seemed wonderfully romantic. The water was probably warm on her feet, too.
She looked at Nathan and smiled; this was probably one of the happiest moments she'd had in a long time, especially since the loss of her mother. She was happy in her library, but the remembrance of her family crept into her mind most nights. She used to think a lot about her past, but Nathan had made her forget. Would her life be better, now that Nate was there? She hoped so, at least for now she felt nothing could make her happier.

So far, things seemed to be going well. The blonde halfbreed smiled, rubbing the back of neck with his hand as Michelle took the box of chocolates. "Oh yeah, you mentioned you liked them, so I thought I'd bring some." he smiled faintly, waiting as she put the chocolates back in her room. He hadn't even thought about the issues of her having to put them away, though he supposed that was why she was the 'smart' one in the relationship.. Not that they had one. Not that they didn't not have one. It felt too early to say that they were.. Well, official or anything. He did really like her and everything. Michelle was one of the coolest people he had ever met in his life. She laughed at all of his jokes, for one. Which was hard, because even he had to admit that some of them were so awful they could probably be considered human endangerment. She also kept the loneliness that had long set in in his life. Up until he had met her, he hadn't had any friends, no family that wanted anything to do with him, no nothing. He was the laughing stock of his graduating class, originally given some random menial task that the captain had thought of to get the blonde kid out of there. She trusted him, and he trusted her. And with her being a librarian, she also made him read stuff occasionally, which wasn't bad either. He wasn't great at it, but he supposed that's why she did it. Which only showed that she had enough interest in him to bother with him furthering his pitiful education.
Nathan led the two of them down the stairs, hopping off the last step. "Look at that, Micky. We've got a badass over here." He said, bowing as he continued to walk, backwards. He was careful not to walk into anything. As he stepped outside, Nathan felt a wonderful breeze. Tonight was a beautiful night for a date. It was warm without being overwhelmingly so and it wasn't cold, which happened often since they lived right on the coast. The blonde halfbreed had always enjoyed the Caribbean breeze, it had a salty taste to it that just made the atmosphere around here more interesting. Casually, he sauntered down the steps of the library, making sure that Michelle was not far behind.
Picking their activity for the evening had been tough, as they had done so many awesome, but abstractly random things as friends. It had been difficult to top bombarding a bad, demon Elvis impersonator with water balloons, but he decided that he would go classic. There couldn't possibly be anything wrong with that, right? He just hoped that Michelle wasn't disappointed by the lack of weirdness that usually pertained to Nathan Alexander's plans. He decided to start out with a walk on the beach and then go to a restaurant he knew to be overlooking the shore, which he had heard was beautiful at night. He didn't intend to tell her how expensive the restaurant they were going to was, as he wanted to impress her. He barely spent anything on himself either and he often just crashed at the Navy barracks, so it wasn't like he had anything better to do with the money he made. "Are you ready, Missus Harland? Our first stop is to the beach. I hope something cliche like that won't put our date off to a rocky start?" the blonde mused, "I just wouldn't be able to sand it if it did."

"No, the beach is quite alright. Why wouldn't it be?" Michelle couldn't resist chuckling, he was one for puns, wasn't he? She wasn't so sure as to how she landed a guy like Nathan, but she was glad she did. He got her out of the library, which she was thankful for. He'd cured most of the loneliness that struck her every now and again. She had friends- many, actually, but none that she talked to often. They were probably more like acquaintances. They definitely didn't venture into her library much, if at all. Literacy wasn't exactly common unless you were wealthy or were required to read and write for some occupation or other.
They'd had some entertaining adventures thus far- none would quite top throwing water balloons at the Elvis impersonators in her book, though. However, she felt that a date like this would be refreshing and simple. A walk on the beach, dinner, Nathan was being unusually romantic and, well, normal. Not that he wasn't romantic, but this is a different "romantic". She had no idea where in particular he had planned for them to eat. The angel hoped it wasn't too much out of his pocket. For all she new he'd picked the best restaurant in town- or even the worst. She was quite sure he was more of a gentleman to pick a cheap place, but she would be happy where ever it happened to be.
Kicking her feet as they went, Michelle began to think of where they might go afterwards. Perhaps his weirdness would occur afterwards. The angel wouldn't be surprised if he pulled a surprise throwing-things-at-hipsters night. She almost hoped he would, with a tub of ice cream alongside. That was pretty much how their first unofficial-friend-date went, after all. She enjoyed those. She had no reason to throw things otherwise, and she needed to work on her aim.
Woop, finally done. And still barely three hundred words. |D
