POWERS
Rather than accepting just a limitation on a power, we are also going to ask that you include a drawback. In case you’re wondering, here is the difference:
A limitation is something that limits the use of the power, or determines when, where, or under what circumstances the power can be used, but doesn’t have a truly negative effect on the user of the power. Some examples of this are:
- Can only be used when touching, or when the user is able to see the target
- Can only be used within x meters/feet of the target
- Can only be used for x amount of time
- Cannot be used for x amount of time afterwards
- Can be used only x number of times a day
These are all wonderful, but they are limitations. We would like at least one of these per power.
Alternatively, we have drawbacks. A drawback is a definitively negative effect that the power has on the user. Examples of this include:
- Goes blind for x amount of time after using this power
- (for a shield) Feels pain when the shield is struck
- Is drained of energy the longer the user uses the power ** this is easy to abuse!
- Instantly passes out after using this power
- Damages the user’s hands/feet/nose/spleen/etc. when the power is used
These are drawbacks. You must have at least one of these per power as well.
As far as specificity of the powers goes (ergo, general pyromancy as opposed to just being able to cover one’s hands in flames), that is up to the individual staff member who is reviewing your application. A good general rule is that the more general the power is, the bigger its drawbacks and limitations should be, since in theory a general power would take more energy than a specific one.
This does not necessarily apply retroactively. We’re not going to ask you to go back and fix all of your character’s powers. However, the staff reserves the right to decide that certain powers are too powerful and request that you add a drawback or limitation. These will, obviously, vary by case.
