The time of the gods is ending...
Once, the gods were all-powerful. Each had his or her own worshippers, people of faith, whose belief gave the gods their strength. They were all equal, once. There was a balance between the forces of chaos and order. The world was (for the most part) at peace, mortals’ petty squabbles kept in check by the gods’ power.
But no longer.
Time passes ever on, and all things must come to an end. As millennia passed, belief in the gods began to fade. Science, the greatest power of change that mortals possess, slowly advanced, explaining many things long attributed to the influence of the gods. These things explained, mortals gradually grew to no longer fear the gods’ wrath. And without fear, faith in the gods waned.
Now the gods are mere shells of their former selves. Without the faith that gave them their power, they are dying. It was supposed to be a secret: the gods’ slow fade is a natural progression.
But their power’s waning is no longer a secret.
Someone found out about the death of the gods. Someone, who then told the world. And now something that should never have been known to the minds of mortals has thrown the world into chaos.
There is a legend that speaks of an artifact hidden on an island whose location is unknown to both mortal and god, that would allow a mortal to take what power remains from the weakened gods and use it to whatever end he or she desired.
It is the possibility of such a prize that has thrown the world into chaos.
A faction of Navy leaders and royalty has come up with what they call the “Final Strike”: the total eradication of all pirates, once and for all, using the power of the gods. They have gathered an initiative to find the island, take the power for themselves, and complete the Navy’s goal of ridding the world of pirates.
But not all Navy agree that this is the right plan. Some still believe in the divinity of the gods. This faction, known as the Restorers, wants to keep the others from finding the island. This faction has funded a great deal of research, hoping to find a way to restore the power of the gods before it’s too late.
The third faction believes the power of the gods is not meant for mortals to hold, nor is it their place to interfere in the natural order. These people just want the time of the gods to end as it naturally should, and let the dangerous power go with it.
In the light of the threat the first faction presents, the pirates of the world are also on the move. They, too, have split into three main factions.
One group, calling itself the Legion, is locked into a deadly competition with the Navy to see who can find the island and its hidden treasure first. As of yet, the leaders of this group are not sure whether or not they wish to turn the Navy’s plan back upon them, or just use the power to gain control in a less violent way.
Another group has taken a more genocidal turn; rather than go after an artifact that may or may not exist, they have turned their attention to destroying the Navy, killing every crew and burning every ship they can find in order to keep the Navy’s plan from succeeding. This is not an organized assault, but the most infamous of these pirates, Jericho Romanov has made himself the leader.
The last faction is a loose grouping, following a reluctant leader. This group has concluded that the only way to survive, barring genocide, is to help the gods regain their power. Led by Tyrin Schiller, a human wary of too much magical power, these pirates have engaged in guerilla warfare against the other factions, slowing them down while a select few try to find the solution.
Of course, these six factions are not the only forces at work. Many want the power of the gods for their own selfish purposes, and others just want the status quo to be restored.
The world is in chaos, but it all boils down to one primary question:
Which side are you on?
